Tish groupDozens of UFCW members in Iowa worked for weeks in the bitter cold to help Hillary Clinton win the Iowa Caucus because she can deliver the real results that hard-working men and women deserve to see.

Amber Vann from UFCW Local 431 works at the Tyson plant in Waterloo. She was excited to help her brothers and sisters feel prepared to caucus. “This is my first caucus and I’m excited because I’ve already learned so much and am helping others do the same,” she said. “We have to be involved in the political process because we’re the ones who are impacted by it the most. I care about making healthcare and education more affordable – the best way to do that is to be involved in the process and elect Hillary Clinton.”

billCyndi Kirkendall from UFCW Local 230 works at Cargill in Ottumwa. “I’m excited to support Hillary because she supports us,” she said. “She wants to make it easier for people to stick together in their workplaces and negotiate for the better wages and benefits that we all deserve.”

Carl McGrone from UFCW Local 431, who works at the Tyson plant in Waterloo, walked many miles and made many phone calls to encourage more UFCW members to participate in the caucus. “I’ve been knocking on doors and making phone calls to help ensure that my coworkers, friends and family members are all ready to caucus,” he said. “I’m most concerned about how we can raise wages and make it easier to secure a strong retirement. I feel strongly that Hillary Clinton is the candidate who can really make those things happen.”

Union households made up 21% of the turnout in Iowa and Hillary won union households by nine points. Labor door knocks, phone calls, mail and member to member persuasion won the Iowa caucus.

crowd3We are proud that the great devotion and enthusiasm of our incredible members could help carry Hillary to a hard-fought victory in the Hawkeye State.

Looking ahead to other primary contests, more and more UFCW members will be convincing their coworkers, friends and families that Hillary Clinton has the experience, composure and grit to rebuild the middle class and bring balance back to our economy.

Jewel-Osco Pharmacy Workers Vote Union “Yes” with UFCW Local 431

Benefits, UFCW Local 431, Wage Increase

L431 Jewel OscoJewel-Osco Pharmacy workers in Clinton, Iowa, have voted to join UFCW Local 431. The 16 workers decided to come together to join UFCW Local 431 to be able to negotiate a fair and systematic way to solve workplace issues, secure schedules, and improve wages and benefits. Several workers have been working at the location for years without a pay raise.

“It was important to us to have a say when it came to our jobs and our work. Now that we are part of a union, together we have the strength to make sure that our voices are heard and we have the power to make our jobs better,” said Kathryn Jaeger, a Jewel-Osco Certified Pharmacy Tech.

An overwhelming majority of the workers voted to join UFCW Local 431 despite an anti-union campaign from the employer. Workers were able to stick together despite the anti-union messaging thanks to meetings and face-to-face conversations with UFCW Local 431 members who are retail food workers in the same store.
