Retail Workers in Maryland Ratify a New Contract

Members of UFCW Local 400 who work at the Bloomingdale’s store in Chevy Chase, Md., voted overwhelmingly to approve a new contract on Nov. 5.

The three-year agreement has no concessions and includes the following provisions:

  • Annual wage increases.

  • A longevity bonus.

  • Improved Joint Labor-Management Committee provisions to incorporate safety as a topic of discussion.

“Congratulations to our members at Bloomingdale’s on winning a strong collective bargaining agreement with zero concessions and added benefits,” said UFCW Local 400 President Mark P. Federici. “By sticking together through tough negotiations and despite the difficult economy, they came out ahead.”

Local 1059 Holds SPUR Training in Ohio

UFCW Local 1059 in Region 4 held a training for Special Project Union Representatives (SPURs) in Columbus, Ohio, on Nov. 5. This training is part of the International’s effort to prepare members to work on organizing campaigns and build a stronger and more united membership.

The three-day training, which was held at UFCW Local 1059’s office in Columbus, brought together SPURs who have been involved in past organizing, servicing, and political efforts. The training included an organizing refresher course and a clinic designed to strengthen the skills needed for effective union work and prepare participants for upcoming campaigns. The training also covered how to effectively distribute handbills, how to probe and reach specific targets, and how to engage workers in meaningful conversations. In addition, the training provided participants with an opportunity to accompany organizers and participate in active campaigns.

“The SPUR training is a great asset to Local 1059,” said UFCW Local 1059 President Mike Nichols. “There is no better messenger for the value of union membership than another member with the lived experience and their personal stories. Now, these members have the tools to help us grow the labor movement.”

“It’s really nice to see the SPURS bring back contact information after talking to the workers,” UFCW Local 1059 Organizing Director Mark Dersom.
