The UFCW continued to stand up for workers’ rights and protections in an increasingly anti-worker political environment this year.

In March, the UFCW publicly denounced President Trump’s executive order to end collective bargaining with a number of federal unions. Also in March, the UFCW responded to the USDA’s announcement that it will instruct the Food Safety and Inspection Service to extend waivers allowing pork and poultry facilities to operate at higher line speeds.
In April, the UFCW spoke out as Congress considered slashing funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as food stamps, by as much as $230 billion or 20 percent over the next 10 years. And in July, our union announced its opposition to the passage of the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” which cuts SNAP and Medicaid funding and delivers real harm to working people. In August, the UFCW also announced its opposition to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) decision to terminate union contracts that cover the department’s food safety inspectors.
And this fall, the UFCW urged elected leaders to put working families first and end the government shutdown. The UFCW also sent a letter to USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins imploring her to use contingency funding and funding for other USDA nutrition programs to fund SNAP for November as the government shutdown continued.
This fall, the UFCW also stood up for immigrant workers by urging lawmakers to reinstate Temporary Protected Status for individuals from designated countries experiencing crises. This call to action was part of the National TPS Alliance’s Week of Action, a coordinated effort to pressure Congress to act.
