On Sept. 27, workers at the Dragonfly Wellness cannabis dispensary in Salt Lake City, Utah, voted to join UFCW Local 99, making history as the first cannabis workers in the state to form a union.
Dragonfly Wellness became Utah’s first operational cannabis pharmacy in March of 2020 and remains one of the only vertically integrated cannabis companies in the state, according to the company’s website. Employees in the newly formed cannabis union include Dragonfly Wellness associates, team leads, drivers, delivery leads, inventory specialists, pharmacists, and head trainers.
“Today, my co-workers and I voted to stand together and secure our collective futures by joining the UFCW Local 99 family,” said Kimberly Mason, a Dragonfly Wellness worker who was part of the organizing process. “We look forward to our next fight for a union contract that actually reflects the hard work and value we bring to the job every day. We formed this union to ensure workers get the wages, benefits, and respect on the job that we deserve.”
“In every corner of the industry, cannabis workers are standing up to demand better for themselves, their co-workers, and their families,” said UFCW Local 99 President Jim McLaughlin. “Today’s historic union election at Dragonfly Wellness is a testament to the strength of the Cannabis Workers Rising movement and marks an important milestone for industry workers across Utah. Now, Dragonfly Wellness employees will finally have a strong voice at work to advocate for a better quality of life and raise the standard of living for cannabis workers statewide.”
