UFCW President Perrone Statement on TPP Negotiators Reaching a Final Agreement

TPP PerroneOn October 5, UFCW International President Marc Perrone released the following statement regarding news that Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) negotiators had reached a final agreement.

“The only good thing about a TPP agreement being reached is that the American people will finally be able to read every line of this deal.

“Given what we already know from leaked drafts, we should prepare for the worst, and expect even worse than that.

“This deal will most likely fail to address currency manipulation, offer big pharmaceutical corporations unacceptable protections that will limit access to life-saving medicine, and threaten every hard-working American family with job losses and lower wages. How could this be good for America?

“Contrary to the rosy rhetoric and false promises, a long history of trade agreements proves that the TPP will have a devastating impact upon our families, our jobs, and this nation.

“In the coming months, hard-working men and women who are a part of the UFCW family will be pushing every member of Congress – Republican and Democrat – to see the harmful effects of this deal through the eyes of everyday American families.

“Make no mistake, this fight is not over.”

UFCW/RWDSU Statement on the Beginning of Auction for A&P Stores

A&PUFCW/RWDSU local unions released the following statement following the multi-day auction to sell A&P stores that have not yet been purchased.

“We are committed to working and partnering with all responsible new store owners to ensure that our hard-working members can continue to provide for their families and give customers the great service that they expect.

“We are seeking meetings with new store owners to discuss the hiring of UFCW/RWDSU members who currently work within sold stores and have started negotiating agreements with some of these parties to secure the strong benefits and wages that our members have rightly earned through their hard work and commitment.

“As a union family, we stand together and support one another through tough times like this.

“We will continue our commitment to help our members move forward into better jobs and lives.”

The UFCW and RWDSU have also launched a member resource website to provide members who work at A&P with quick access to helpful resources and programs.

To further ensure that workers can obtain the tools they need to get back on their feet, locals will also begin hosting several resource fairs. Local union employers will be on hand at these resource fairs to speak with members about possible job opportunities.
