UFCW Local 663’s new Meat Cutter Training Program is creating a path to a better life for our members in Minnesota who want to upgrade their skills, transition from part-time to full-time, and earn higher wages.
The free training program, which is a result of UFCW Local 663’s contract wins last year, was created for modified part-time meat cutters to become full-time classified assistants over a period of 12 months.
Omar Sanchez, a UFCW Local 663 member who works at Jerry’s Cub Foods in St. Louis Park, Minn., is one of many part-time meat cutters that took advantage of this opportunity.
“I saw a notice for the Meat Cutter Training Program at the Jerry’s Cub Foods on Broadway posted by the time clock, and I approached Shawn the manager and signed up,” Sanchez said. “I thought, ‘this is a good opportunity to make more money for my family.’ Now that I’m full-time, I have health insurance for my son who is in kindergarten.”
“For anyone that is considering applying to the program, I say do it!” Sanchez added. “It is a wonderful union benefit, so sign up. We have a great union.”
The Meat Cutter Training Program is included in the following UFCW Local 663 contracts: Jerry’s, Supervalu, Haug’s, Radermachers, King’s Andover, Oxendale’s, Driskill’s, Almsted’s, Knowlan’s Festival, Everett’s, Ingebretsen’s, and Bergan’s.
