UFCW OUTreach scholarship winners who are members of UFCW Locals 711, 770, 1059, 1428, 1776KS and 1995 attended the Creating Change Conference in Detroit on Jan. 23 to 27. This is the second year that UFCW OUTreach has provided scholarships to the Creating Change Conference, which is the foremost political, leadership and skills-building conference for the LGBTQ social justice movement.
UFCW OUTreach Executive Board members have served as a key voice for working class and labor issues at the Creating Change Conference during the past four years. Providing scholarships to UFCW members so that they can attend this conference is a critical step in recruiting and developing new leaders within our union and in the broader LGBTQ movement.
The UFCW OUTreach scholarships were awarded to: UFCW Local 711 Beatrice Borha and UFCW Local 770 member Cody Staudacher, both of whom work at Vons; UFCW Local 1059 member Brooke Buskirk, who works at Kroger; UFCW Local 1428 member Regina Bocanegra, who works at Stater Bros. Markets; UFCW Local 1776KS member Chris Knight, who works at Acme Markets; and UFCW Local 1995 member David Crick, who works at Kroger.
“I feel really excited to be part of this movement,” said Knight. “It was a wonderful experience and something I will never forget. I learned that there are lot of different struggles out there, and that we need to come together to figure the best way to tackle all of our struggles.”
