Members of the RWDSU Local 108 West New York Crossing Guards unit ratified a new contract in August. The crossing guards work in all types of weather to ensure that kids in West New York, N.J., get to school and back safely.
The new four-year contract sees wage increases every year of the contract, including a $.50 hourly increase retroactive to September, 2015. Starting rates for new crossing guards will increase $.25 each year of the contract, with current starting rates at $10.50 an hour. The uniform allowance has been expanded to include boots.
“Eight years ago, these workers earned minimum wage with no benefits. What a difference a union has made!” said shop steward Daisy Rodriguez.
