On July 11, workers at Native American LifeLines in Baltimore and Boston joined UFCW Local 27 after securing a voluntary recognition agreement from their employer. Native American LifeLines is a Title V Indian Health Services contracted Urban Indian Health Program serving the Baltimore and Boston metropolitan areas, and the workers are employed as case managers, coordinators, office assistants, and therapists.

The workers approached UFCW Local 27 organizers about forming a union in March because they wanted fair and consistent raises, clear and equitable workplace policies, improved job security, and open and transparent communication with leadership. In June, the workers presented the company with a demand for recognition. The workers’ support for starting a union was virtually unanimous and the company agreed to voluntarily recognize the union. Negotiations on a first union contract are scheduled to take place within 60 days.
“We are proud to welcome the staff of Native American LifeLines,” said UFCW Local 27 President Jason Chorpenning. “Their work is essential to the well-being and survival of native communities in Baltimore, Boston and beyond, and their decision to organize is a powerful act of solidarity and strength. We look forward to supporting them as they negotiate a fair contract that reflects their dignity, their values, and their unwavering commitment to their community.”
