Over 8,000 members of UFCW Local 880 who work at 58 Giant Eagle and 20 Heinen’s stores in northeast Ohio ratified industry-leading contracts on Dec. 5 that strengthen wages and benefits. Frontline workers from both Giant Eagle and Heinen’s served on the bargaining committee.
Key provisions of the four-year contracts include:
• The highest guaranteed wage increases these contracts have provided in decades.
• Higher starting rates and premium wage rates.
• Expanded access to affordable family coverage.
• Expanded preventative services for children and adults.
• Improved paid time off benefits to help maintain a better work-life balance.
“This isn’t just a contract – it’s a blueprint for how America’s essential workers should be treated,” said UFCW Local 880 President Miles Anderson. “Our members kept our communities fed during the darkest days of the pandemic. With these contracts, Giant Eagle and Heinen’s are recognizing not only how essential their workers are to their success, but also the vital role they fulfill in our communities.”
“In my years working at Giant Eagle, this is hands down the strongest contract I’ve seen,” said Laura, who is a Giant Eagle deli manager. “The wage increases we won through our union truly recognize those of us who’ve dedicated our careers to serving the community at our stores.”
“Giant Eagle and Heinen’s have set a new standard for the industry,” Anderson added. “When you shop at these stores, you’re supporting businesses that invest in your community and treat workers with the respect they deserve. That’s something everyone can feel good about.”
