On Sept. 9, about 40 workers at five The Joint cannabis dispensaries in the city of Saskatoon in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan joined UFCW Local 1400. This organizing win marks the first time cannabis workers have organized with our union in Saskatoon.
This unit is largely made up of younger individuals who are deeply committed to advancing both their working conditions and the cannabis industry. They joined our union to address various workplace issues and secure a fair collective agreement. This organizing win underscores a broader trend within the cannabis sector, where workers are increasingly seeking to establish strong, supportive workplace environments by joining the UFCW.
“The decision to join UFCW 1400 reflects their strong belief in the power of collective strength and fairness,” said UFCW Local 1400 President Lucy Figueiredo. “These workers are not just employees; they are passionate professionals who take pride in the vital service they provide to the community. Their expertise in the cannabis sector makes them well-suited to push for better working conditions.”
