On May 23, workers at Genesis HealthCare, an assisted living facility in Millville, N.J., voted to join UFCW Local 152 for a better life. The 88 employees work as Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) at Genesis HealthCare.
The workers reached out to UFCW Local 152 in early 2023 after hearing positive feedback about the union from others in the industry. Specifically, these workers learned that the LPNs and RNs at Eagleview Health and Rehabilitation (now Big Oak Rehabilitation), a neighboring facility just 10 miles away, voted to join UFCW Local 152 in late 2022.
However, an aggressive campaign by the company — resulting in multiple charges filed against Genesis HealthCare — delayed the vote to unionize as the company’s actions were reviewed by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).
After the NLRB determined that Genesis HealthCare had indeed engaged in unfair labor practices, the board ordered the company to communicate clearly that the workers have the legal right to organize their workplace without fear or intimidation. The election was then able to move forward, resulting in the workers’ victory on May 23.
UFCW Local 152 will meet with the Genesis HealthCare workers in the coming weeks to draft contract proposals and schedule bargaining dates with the company.
“These workers fought an uphill battle to unionize and we’re proud to welcome them into our local,” said UFCW Local 152 President Daniel Ross, Jr. “We look forward to helping them accomplish their goals and secure a first contract with their employer.”
“These essential workers at Genesis HealthCare no longer have to settle for workplace grievances that go unheard,” Ross added. “As members of Local 152, they will be treated with respect for the work they perform and empowered to seek the improvements they deserve.”
“No great achievement is possible without persistent work,” said Kim Wing, a CNA at Genesis HealthCare. “I must say, it was hard work getting people to come together as one, but we got it done! I think the union is the best decision we made. They are here to help 100 percent and are available to talk whenever we have concerns.”
