Virginia Delegate Lee Carter’s gubernatorial campaign staff recently made history by joining UFCW Local 400. This organizing win marks the first time that gubernatorial campaign staff has voted to join a union in Virginia.
Carter represents Virginia’s 50th District in the House of Delegates, which includes the city of Manassas and part of Prince William County. He announced his candidacy for governor of Virginia earlier this year, and his gubernatorial campaign staff joined our union family by a unanimous vote for the better wages and benefits that come with a union contract. In 2019, Carter’s campaign staff for his position in the House of Delegates became the first campaign workers in Virginia history to form a union after organizing with UFCW Local 400. Negotiations on the first union contract for Delegate Carter’s gubernatorial campaign staff are now underway.
“We are proud to welcome the first-ever unionized gubernatorial campaign staff in Virginia to our union family,” said UFCW Local 400 President Mark Federici. “These workers have joined the growing ranks of unionized political staffers around the country who are putting their values into action in the workplace.”
The UFCW has been proud to welcome political and campaign workers to our union family. Last year, office staff working for the Democratic Party of Virginia joined UFCW Local 400. This year, office staff working for the Maine Democratic Party joined UFCW Local 1445 for the better wages and benefits that come with a union contract.
