Social service workers at Brandon Housing First in the city of Brandon in Manitoba, Canada, recently joined UFCW Local 832.

Brandon Housing First provides vital services in the community, supporting individuals and families who are transitioning into stable housing. The 34 workers deliver frontline support, advocacy, and outreach, ensuring that some of the most vulnerable members of the community receive the resources and care they need.
By joining UFCW Local 832, workers at Brandon Housing First have taken an important step to improve their workplace and protect the value of the work they do. The decision reflects a growing recognition that housing and social service workers play a key role in building stronger communities, yet often face challenges such as heavy workloads, limited resources, and a lack of recognition for their contributions.
“These workers are integral to helping their community and making sure that someone’s looking out for people who are unhoused and vulnerable,” said UFCW Local 832 President Jeff Traeger. “It’s important that they also have someone looking out for them. We’re looking forward to supporting them and negotiating their first contract.”
