Workers at Banner Fish in Brooklyn, N.Y., recently joined UFCW Local 342.
The five workers, who are employed as drivers, are responsible for picking up and distributing fish products to hotels, airlines, cruise lines, casinos, and supermarkets. They joined our union family because they wanted a voice in the workplace and were tired of being ignored and mistreated. They were also concerned about losing their benefits.
The campaign to organize these workers included showing the workers the better wages and benefits our union drivers at other companies have acquired through collective bargaining and educating them about the union difference.
The workers are looking forward to negotiating their first union contract.
“By joining Local 342, I feel protected,” said Kishan Sukhllall, who has worked as a driver at Banner Fish for seven years. “I know that with their help, I will have better working conditions and fair treatment.”
