UFCW OUTreach scholarship winners who are members of UFCW Locals 400, 770, 888 and 1059 attended the Creating Change Conference in Dallas on Jan 15 to 19.
This is the third year that UFCW OUTreach has provided scholarships to the Creating Change Conference, which is the foremost political, leadership and skills-building conference for the LGBTQ+ social justice movement.
UFCW OUTreach Executive Board members attending the conference each year have served as a key voice for issues impacting hard-working families and the labor movement. Providing scholarships to UFCW members helps our union family to strengthen new member recruitment and develop new leaders within our union and in the broader LGBTQ+ movement.
The UFCW OUTreach scholarships were awarded to UFCW Local 400 member Lisa Morris, who workers at Kroger in Virginia; UFCW Local 770 member Shannon Campbell, who works at Ralph’s in California; UFCW Local 888 member Ruth Perez, who works at a Century 21 store in New York; UFCW Local 888 member Yvonne Yearwood, who works at a Century 21 store in New Jersey; and UFCW Local 1059 member Shelby Jackson, who workers at Kroger in Ohio.
“The conference was so informative,” said Perez. “We learned about different ways to get younger and older LGBTQ+ communities engaged in activities and communications. I can use this information and these skills to help in my local union. LGBTQ+ workers would all benefit from union representation.”
