On July 12, UFCW Local 204 hosted a Member Resource Fair for members of our union family affected by the Kroger store closings in North Carolina. Over 100 members of UFCW Local 204 attended the resource fair, which was held in Durham. UFCW staff and employment professionals helped members with a range of services, including unemployment benefits, pension assistance, health care information, union discounts, job searches, resume writing, and interview training.
Kroger announced that it planned to close its 14 stores in the Raleigh-Durham area in June, and the store closures affect about 1,500 full- and part-time workers. Most of the stores slated to close will soon be reopened as Harris Teeter locations. UFCW Local 204 is working actively with community allies and elected officials to bring displaced members an opportunity to secure jobs in the future.
