On June 16, UFCW International President Marc Perrone issued a statement in response to Amazon’s acquisition of Whole Foods for $13.7 billion.

“Amazon’s brutal vision for retail is one where automation replaces good jobs. That is the reality today at Amazon, and it will no doubt become the reality at Whole Foods.

“Sadly, the hard-working men and women who work at Whole Foods now face an uncertain future because the Amazon model for grocery stores ultimately leads to fewer jobs, worse benefits, and more automation. Make no mistake, these are not the values most Americans believe in nor the ones embraced by many Whole Foods customers.

“While Amazon may prefer a path that treats Americans as if they are just faceless workers, the employees of Whole Foods deserve better and should realize they’ve earned the right to a better life.”

On May 22, 15 members of UFCW Local 27 who work as licensed practical nurses at the Moran Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Westernport, Md., ratified their first union contract.

The two-year contract includes wage increases during both years of the contract, a longevity bonus, and mandated restrictions on overtime. The new contract also recognizes seniority and establishes a grievance procedure process.

The licensed practical nurses at Moran Manor are excited about their first union contract.

“I’m excited and relieved! It’s a great feeling to know that someone will always have our back at the work place,” said Blake Mangold.

“It feels great to have a contract! This contract will improve our working conditions and will be great for the employees,” said Melissa Lantz.

“I feel a sense of relief,” said Melinda Basinger. “It’s great to know that someone has your back.”

“I am very proud of our Organizing Department and Bargaining Committee for getting these hard-working LPNs a great union contract,” said UFCW Local 27 President Jason Chorpenning. “In today’s economic climate, it is more important than ever to have union representation, and with this agreement, these hard-working men and women can now enjoy the benefits of a collective bargaining agreement that brings well deserved wage increases, benefits, and dignity in the workplace. We are extremely happy to welcome Moran Manor LPNs into our Local 27 family!”

“Moran Manor LPNs are some of the hardest working health care workers in Maryland, and I am happy that through the hard work of our organizers and their coworkers on the Bargaining Committee, we can bring them the job security, benefits, and wage increases that will enable them to provide for their families while they are providing exceptional care to their residents!” said Richard Wildt, UFCW Local 27 executive assistant to the president and vice president.
