UFCW Local 186D is advocating for its members in Modesto, Calif., who will be laid off by G-3 Enterprises, a subsidiary of E.&J. Gallo Winery, starting next month.

“We are working to negotiate severance for our members and will be supporting them as they and our community navigate this difficult time,” said UFCW Local 186D President Dee Chacon.

The 45 members, who operated the machinery that makes the screw caps, will also receive help with resume writing, interview practice, job searches, and enrolling in training programs.

Cesar Lara of the California Federation of Labor Unions’ Workforce and Economic Development department is providing additional support to G-3 Enterprises employees by organizing a job fair.

The layoffs are attributed to reduced demand for wine, rising operating costs, and increased competitive dynamics across the supply chain.

UFCW Local 186D currently represents 1,539 E.&J. Gallo workers throughout the state.

The 46 new members operate heavy machinery and coordinate logistics and inventory control at the Denver plant, which manufactures high-end pet foods. The vote to join UFCW Local 7 came earlier this summer, inspired by a desire for a safer workplace, greater accountability from management, and a stronger voice on the job for both full- and part-time employees.

Organizers credit an innovative “I’m Voting Yes!” campaign, in part, for the win. Workers shared their reasons for voting in favor of unionization, then their names and photos were featured on a flyer. They also wore stickers showing their support for the unionizing effort, even during meetings with management intended to discourage organizing.

Warehouse worker and new member Diego Marquez said being part of the campaign for fair treatment has brought him closer to his co-workers.

“We needed the union to bring true transparency and accountability for all,” he said. “Being part of UFCW Local 7 has given us a sense of pride and brotherhood that we didn’t feel before.”

The plant produces more than 260,000 tons of pet food annually under brand names including Dog Chow, Cat Chow, Kit ‘n Kaboodle, Alpo, Beneful, Purina ONE Beyond, Purina ONE, and Pro Plan.

Organizers hope to start contract negotiations in the coming months.
