On Sept. 15, the UFCW issued a statement of support in response to the United Auto Workers union’s decision to strike.
“For years, the auto industry has made record-breaking profits while America’s hard-working auto workers’ pay has remained largely stagnant,” said UFCW International President Marc Perrone in a statement. “From auto workers to grocery workers, it is the workers on the frontlines and the assembly line who generate the real wealth and success for corporate America and our economy. No union should stand silent as powerful corporations profit while workers’ wages and benefits suffer.”
“What is clear today is that this was a strike forced upon 150,000 workers by the failures of the Big 3 who left America’s auto workers no other choice than to stand together and fight for the better treatment they’ve earned and deserve,” Perrone added. “United Auto Workers deserve a union contract that truly reflects their hard work and contributions, and our members stand firm and ready to support them in this fight. The UFCW and all our 1.3 million members will stand ready to support the United Auto Workers in labor’s latest defining struggle to lift up the working and middle class, not just for auto workers but for all Americans.”
