Barnes & Noble baristas and booksellers at the chain’s South Burlington, Vt., location voted recently to unionize with UFCW Local 1459. Workers took inspiration from other booksellers who have won strong union contracts, and they were further encouraged by organizing efforts at neighboring retail businesses in the Burlington area.

Increased wages and benefits are top priorities for approximately 25 bookstore workers, but just as important is firm safety language and fair treatment. Both issues were addressed in UFCW Local 1459’s existing contract with employees at the Hadley, Mass., Barnes & Noble store. The Vermont workers reviewed that contract and liked the fact that it addressed their concerns, while also honoring their dedication to the store.
“I think there is a misconception among employers that unionizing is driven by anger and resentment on the part of workers. Though there may be some of that, ultimately, I was grateful to serve on the organizing committee for unionizing our Barnes & Noble out of hope for the future, as well as love and respect for my co-workers, and yes, B&N itself. Love and respect are sustainable; anger and resentment, not so much,” said Sebastain Ryder, lead bookseller.
Contract negotiations are underway and organizers are hopeful the workers will have a deal to ratify in the coming months.
