About 57 workers at the Charles County Public Library in Charles County, Md., joined UFCW Local 1994 on March 26.

These workers joined our union family because of concerns about critical workplace issues, including heavy workloads and the difficulty of gaining full-time employment rather than working part-time hours.
The organizing effort, which began on June 3, 2024, was led by UFCW Local 1994 Organizing Director Ray Lee, along with staff members John Kilker and Steve Valentich, and supported by Region 2 Representatives Alejandro Miranda and Donald Minor. The workers also played a strong role in the organizing campaign, which included on site and virtual meetings with other workers to build support and signing digital authorization cards. Despite management’s attempts to dissuade employees through targeted email communications, these workers remained committed to their goal of unionization.
“This victory is a testament to the determination and solidarity of the library staff,” said Lee. “By standing together, they have taken an important step toward securing fairer working conditions and a stronger future for all employees.”
