On Oct. 8, the UFCW Women’s Network and UFCW OUTreach hosted “The Power of Your Vote” webinar, which highlighted what is at stake for UFCW women, 2SLGBTQ+ people, and all UFCW members this election year. UFCW members in the U.S. and Canada joined the call, which featured Maya Harris, who is a lawyer, public policy advocate, and Vice President Harris’s sister, as the guest speaker.
In addition to Harris, participants also heard from UFCW Local 1428 Secretary-Treasurer and Women’s Network Chair Deliana Speights, who spoke about the UFCW’s effort to get out the vote in support of the Harris-Walz ticket. Speights also emphasized the importance of reelecting Senator Jacky Rosen in Nevada, electing U.S. Senate candidate Ruben Gallego in Arizona, and protecting reproductive freedom for women. UFCW Local 1776 Secretary-Treasurer and Chair of UFCW OUTreach Michele Kessler highlighted the UFCW’s work in Pennsylvania and the importance of protecting the rights of 2SLGBT+ people in this election. RWDSU International Representative and Political Director of the Southeast Council Sandra Williams reported on the crucial work to get out the vote in Georgia and what is a stake this election for people of color. After the call, UFCW members helped to get out the vote through phone banking.
The UFCW Women’s Network and UFCW OUTreach are looking for volunteers to help get out the vote by participating in phone banks on Wednesday afternoons and evenings on Oct. 16, 23 and 30. You can get more information here.
